With today's national foreclosure rate up over 60% from what it was last year, more and more people are forced to leave their homes. |

But many aren't leaving their homes empty. They are leaving
their pets behind to fend for themselves.
Desperate and displaced, people and families abandon their homes
and their pets.
Some people do so out of sheer malice. A dog or cat is meerly another object that they owned and now, with the loss of their home and possibly their job, they are no longer able to afford the animal and simply leave it behind or turn it loose outside. |

Others, however, simply leave their pets out of misguided love. Fearing that if they drop their loved one off at a shelter that it will be put down, they leave the pet in the house with food and water. Unfortunately, in most cases, it is not enough. The dog or cat quickly becomes dehydrated These poor animals are not discovered until weeks or months later and by then, it is too late. The amount of animals left abandoned has become so great that shelters in areas have become overrun. Many are filled to capacity and with many people opting not to adopt due to financial reasons these days, many abandoned pets are not able to be placed into a home. The need for help for pets left behins has become so great that the Humane Society of the United States has created a grant program. Although the seed amount is only 15,000, it is a start. Any little bit will help. |
