Research The Breeder
Responsible breeders are dog lovers first and sellers second. Be wary of any breeder who seems more concerned with getting paid over finding the best home for their dogs. There are some things you should demand , as the buyer, from the breeder.

Why do they want a dog? Taking care of a dog is a large responsibility. Puppies are cute and people love the idea of getting them, but its important that they understand the responsibility they are undertaking.

| Ask who in the family will be responsible for the pup's daily care, who will attend training classes, where the dog will spend most of its time, and what "rules" have been decided upon for the puppy--for example, will the dog be allowed on furniture? |
| If they own a pet can they provide a veterinary reference or, if they don't have other pets, are they considering getting any. |
| If they do not own their home can they provide proof from their landlord or condominium board (if they rent or live in a condominium complex) that they are allowed to have companion animals. |
